Financial Supporters /Objectives
Since our inception in February 2006, major supporters of Food for Thought include the Outer Banks Community Foundation, the Duke Endowment Foundation, the Hasbro Fund through the Food Bank of the Albemarle, the Percy W. & Elizabeth G. Meekins Charitable Trust plus contributions from area churches, community groups, individuals, businesses and governmental entities.)
2009-2010 Funding Objectives
- Increase participation by 20% in Food for Thought by eligible preschool and elementary children as well as the Alternative School.
- Initiate the first middle school and high school pilot program at Cape Hatteras Middle School and Cpe Hatteras High School
- Expand the 2009 summer weekend/holidays feeding program to more students at the YMCA summer program and to the summer 4-H program in 2010.
- Establish mentoring groups to explore the creation of a similar pilot program in a neighboring county during the next school year.
•2010-2011 Funding Obejctives:

Increase participation in the number of eligible preschool, elementary and secondary children receiving weekend and holiday meals from 466 to 600.
- Expand participation Food for Thought summer weekend/holidays feeding program among students from the YMCA summer program and 4-H summer program
- Continue providing mentoring support to the pilot program in a neighboring county.
- Explore the possibility of educating older youth about eating healthy. ($132,275 based on weekend meal bags at $6.50 each for 37 weeks).

Ways to Donate.
When you provide financial support to Food for Thought, more than 98 cents per dollar goes directly to feeding the children. Each weekend bag cost about $6.25 to provide two breakfasts two lunches and snacks. That will be more than $83,220 for the 2009-2010 school year.
Here are some ways to donate tax-deductible funds:
- Create an annual line-item in your church/business/organization’s budget
- Establish a legacy gift
- Endow a child for life for $5,000 (current annual costs)
- Adopt a child for a year - $250
- Provide a gift of $25 for a bushel of fruit for a weekend
- Give in-kind gift such as bags, printing, graphics etc.
- Contribute free or at no cost individual entrees, desserts, milk fresh fruit and other needed meal items
