Financial Supporters /Objectives
Since our inception in February 2006, major supporters of Food for Thought include the Outer Banks Community Foundation, the Duke Endowment Foundation, the Hasbro Fund through the Food Bank of the Albemarle, the Percy W. & Elizabeth G. Meekins Charitable Trust plus contributions from area churches, community groups, individuals, businesses and governmental entities.

200708 Funding Objectives

  • Expand services to feed more elementary children and some preschool children in Dare County that meet specific criteria, raising the total from 260 to 360*

     •  Expand to serve  
•  Serve, for first time, 80 percent of the 90 four-years-olds in More for Four
•  Serve, for first time, 100 percent of the 40 three and four-year-olds in Head Start Program.
($83,200)

2008-09 Funding Objectives

  • Expand services to feed more preschool and elementary children in Dare County that meet specific criteria, growing the total from 360 to 503*

•  Expand to serve 75 percent of all eligible elementary children in Dare County
•  Expand to serve 85 percent of the 90 four-years-olds in More for Four
•  Serve 100 percent of the 40 three and four-year-olds in Head Start Program.
($124,241, based on weekend meal bags rising to $6.50 each)

  • Investigate possibilities of  feeding the same children in the summer of 2009 (TBA)

 

  • Explore possibilities for educating older youth about eating healthy (TBA)
  • Research participation in an intergenerational teaching vegetable garden (TBA)

 

  • Develop educational newsletter for weekend bags (TBA)

*Figure fluctuates in winter due to economy

Ways to Donate
When you provide financial support to Food for Thought, more than 98 cents per dollar goes directly to feeding the children.  Each weekend bag cost about $6 to provide two breakfasts two lunches and snacks.  That will be more than $83,220 for the 2007-08 school year.  Plus, there are other operating expenses such as insurance, office and marketing supplies, averaging $1,500 each year. 

  Here are some ways to donate tax-deductible funds:

  • Create an annual line-item in your church/business/organization’s budget
  • Establish a legacy gift
  • Endow a child for life for $4,500 (current annual costs)
  • Adopt a child for a year - $230
  • Provide a gift of $25 for a bushel of fruit for a weekend
  • Give in-kind gift such as bags, printing, graphics etc.
  •  Contribute free or at no cost individual entrees, desserts, milk fresh fruit and other needed meal items
